If you work with steel pipe—whether in oil & gas, construction, or industrial applications—you know how critical it is to have accurate pipe size data at your fingertips. That’s why Omega Steel is proud to offer a comprehensive pipe chart, available free of charge to anyone who uses pipe in their operations.

What Is a Pipe Chart and Why Is It Important?
A pipe chart is a reference tool that outlines key specifications for various pipe sizes, including:
- Nominal Pipe Size (NPS): A standardized designation used to identify pipe diameter. It doesn’t always match the actual outside diameter but is essential for compatibility and ordering.
- OD (Outer Diameter): The actual external measurement of the pipe, crucial for fitting and installation.
- Pipe Schedule: A system that defines the wall thickness of a pipe. Common schedules include:
- Schedule 10, 20, 40, 80, 160
- Standard (STD), Extra Heavy (XH), Double Extra Heavy (XXH)
What Are Pipe Schedules and How Were They Developed?
Pipe schedules were introduced by the American National Standards Institute (ANSI) to standardize wall thicknesses across different pipe sizes. The schedule number correlates with the pipe’s wall thickness and pressure rating:
- Lower schedule numbers (e.g., Sch 10) indicate thinner walls, suitable for low-pressure applications.
- Higher schedule numbers (e.g., Sch 160) indicate thicker walls, designed for high-pressure or high-temperature environments.
The schedule system ensures consistency across manufacturers and simplifies engineering calculations. It’s especially important in industries where safety and performance are critical.
What Does Omega Steel Stock?
We break our inventory down into three categories:
- Seamless X65: OD ranges from 2” to 24”, with pipe schedules from STD through XXH
- SAWL X65: OD ranges from 16” to 48”, with wall thicknesses from .375” (STD) up through 1.5”
- Large OD X56: OD ranges from 54” to 60”, with wall thicknesses from .500” to 1.00”
All inventory is Charpy tested to -50°F, available in heavy wall, and can be cut to length to meet your project needs.
